Selling military items: before you list
What sells here
Medals and decorations, helmets, uniforms and headgear, insignia, bayonets and edged weapons, equipment, military photographs and papers, from the Revolution and First Empire to the Cold War. A single piece as well as the contents of an inherited trunk.
What is refused
Ammunition, shells, grenades, detonators and pyrotechnic items, without exception: if you find one, here is who to call. Any item glorifying Nazism or crimes against humanity. Deactivated weapons are accepted subject to the regulations in force, and must be declared as such. The details: what French law says.
Setting a price
There is no official price guide for militaria. First identify the piece precisely, then look up sales actually concluded for comparable pieces, not asking prices. The step-by-step method: valuing a military item.
Photos and a description that sell
Photograph the front, the back, the markings and the flaws in daylight. Describe what you see, say what you do not know. And clean nothing: a dirty but intact piece sells better than one wrongly cleaned (why).
Sorting an inheritance
Keep a soldier's medal, service book and photographs together: a coherent named group is worth far more than the sum of its parts. Before selling, read what to do with an ancestor's military items.
